One project that’s generating buzz is a system that offers real-time language translation for city hall visitors via screens or smartphones, thereby making government more accessible. The success of this pilot helped identify and correct translation issues, like misinterpretation of company names as common nouns.

The city’s strong Vietnamese community has also provided valuable input for translation tools, showcasing how local demographics can drive innovation. Thanks to the GovAI Coalition, San Jose has crafted a remarkable translation model by combining language pairs from various cities.

Furthering its AI ambitions, San Jose is optimizing public transportation routes using AI, significantly reducing the number of red-light stops for buses. Initial findings showed a remarkable 50% reduction in potential stops. Tasha Dean, the chief communications officer, noted this is a key factor in attracting both tech startups and residents.

Caines shared another success story from the city’s object detection pilot, wherein outfitted city vehicles proactively identify infrastructure issues before reports from residents. This helps improve service delivery by efficiently addressing basic community needs.

Despite its position as the 12th largest U.S. city, San Jose had to work hard to embrace AI in public sector processes. According to Dean, the city boasts more patents per capita in AI than its larger neighbors, helping solidify its status as a manufacturing and technological powerhouse. As Dean succinctly put it, “We believe that San Jose is the capital of AI.”
