Palkovics: Hungary’s National Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence is Among Country’s Top Research Institutions

László Palkovics announced at SZTAKI that Hungary’s National Laboratory for AI, MILAB, is among the top research institutions in the country. He highlighted its collaboration with the AI Coalition and upcoming tools to track AI developments. László Palkovics, Hungary’s government commissioner for artificial intelligence, couldn’t have chosen a better venue to showcase the nation’s strides in AI. Speaking at the SZTAKI lab in Budapest this past Monday, he confidently declared that the National Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence, also known as MILAB, ranks among the top research institutions in Hungary.

Palkovics emphasized the tight interconnection of MILAB with the Artificial Intelligence Coalition, a collaborative effort that unites businesses, academic institutions, and research centers. Established back in 2018, the coalition has fostered a rich ecosystem which supports innovation in AI. He went on to announce that in just a few weeks, a new dashboard will be launched. This tool will allow for a clear overview of ongoing AI initiatives across Hungary.

This isn’t Hungary’s first rodeo in the AI arena. Palkovics revealed that the country’s research expertise in artificial intelligence dates way back to the 1970s. Thanks to this long history, Hungary finds itself in a strong position for AI advancements. In fact, 2020 saw Hungary emerging as the fourth European nation, trailing only behind Finland, Sweden, and the UK, to roll out a government-led AI strategy. An update to this strategy is on the horizon, he mentioned.

Adding another layer to the discussion, László Bodis, deputy state secretary for innovation, echoed Palkovics’ sentiments by pointing out that AI represents more than just a wave of technological change. It holds promise for significant economic and social transformation. He stressed that MILAB is collaborating with ten partners to determine effective ways to leverage AI for economic growth and societal benefit.
