At the heart of the issue was Sepolia’s permissioned deposit contract, which the Ethereum Foundation identified quickly. The misconfiguration led to many execution layer clients being unable to include transactions in blocks, demonstrating that the problem was specific to the Sepolia test rather than Pectra itself. Developers managed to swiftly restore normal functionality after identifying the root cause.
Despite the fix, the issues raised red flags regarding Pectra’s testing adequately. The earlier Holesky testnet also suffered from misconfigurations among validators. “I do think the incidents on both the Holesky and Sepolia testnets warrant a delay to Pectra mainnet activation,” stated Christine Kim, vice president of research at Galaxy Digital. She emphasized the necessity for more preparation within the broader Ethereum ecosystem prior to launch.
Core developers plan to convene on March 7 to address Pectra’s official launch timeline. Any delay could ignite debates among Ethereum supporters, who are already anxious due to fluctuations in ETH token pricing and leadership tensions within the Ethereum Foundation amidst competition from networks like Solana.
